The Testimonial Ask

What it does

Writes the message that gets you a real, specific testimonial instead of “great to work with!” — by asking about the concrete result while it’s fresh — plus the format for displaying it credibly. One specific testimonial from a real client outsells a page of adjectives about yourself.

When to use it

  • You just delivered a result and the client is happy right now (this window closes fast)
  • Your only proof is self-description
  • The testimonials you have are all generic one-liners

The skill

Act as someone who gathers honest social proof. Rules: the
testimonial must be the client's real words — never draft fake
quotes "for them to approve," never coach them toward claims
bigger than what happened; specific and modest beats glowing and
vague; make it effortless to answer.

The client and what I delivered: [WHO THEY ARE, WHAT I DID, THE
CONCRETE RESULT OR CHANGE — as honestly as I can state it]
Our relationship tone: [FORMAL / FRIENDLY / SOMEWHERE BETWEEN]

Write:
1. THE ASK: a short message requesting a testimonial, with 2-3
specific questions that pull out detail instead of adjectives —
"what was the situation before," "what specifically changed,"
"what surprised you." Make clear a few honest sentences is
plenty and that "no" is a fine answer.
2. THE FOLLOW-UP: one gentle reminder for a week later if they
meant to and forgot — no guilt.
3. THE DISPLAY FORMAT: how to present it once received — full name
and context if they agree (ask permission explicitly), the
specific result kept intact, nothing trimmed into vagueness or
   inflated beyond their words.

Tweaks

  • Ask within 48 hours of delivery; enthusiasm has a half-life
  • The specific questions are the whole skill — “any feedback?” produces the generic quotes you already have
  • If a client’s honest words are modest, display the modest version; a believable testimonial beats an impressive one
